Neck through Custom Deluxe #47
This instrument was built to the vision of the owner. He had very specific ideas on the concept on all details from the timbers to be used right down to the switching options in the specialised wiring schematic. It is based on an obvious existing body design but everything else about the guitar is very different from the original.
Timbers are Korina for the center section with a mahagony center strip. The wings are Australian blackwood and fingerboard is premium grade Indian rosewood. Pickups are B90's by Mick Brierley and are wide bobbin single coils with a distinctive tone somewhere between a light wound humbucker and a P90. Tone is very clear with excellent string separation. The bridge pickup is meaty with excellent upper mid response. The neck pickup is warm and sweet.
Switching is via a 5 way rotary selector yeilding bridgealone, bridge and neck in series, bridge and neck in series out of phase, bridge and neck in parralel and neck alone. The tone control is stacked with a bass cut [clarity control] on top and the standard tone [treble cut] control on the bottom. Volume control has a high pass filter allowing more clarity as the volume is rolled back.
It felt great to play, well balanced with an easy low action and a wide tonal pallet available. It is a unique, hand built, one off guitar that it is very unlikely to be built again, at least by myself.
