#29 1979 Rickenbacker 4001 bass rebuild - not for sale
This was purchased from overseas on Ebay as slightly damaged and arrived at my workshop literally smashed to pieces. The centre section comprising the neck and the body centre beam was bent at the 11th fret and the timbers had shattered just below the headstock to about the 5th fret and de-laminated at the butt. The wings luckily had popped off cleanly. To make things worse a couple of the major fractures had been clumsily glued with epoxy up around the 1st and 2nd fret.
The project brief was to salvage what I could and build it into a usable bass. I had the wings, bridge, tuners, nut, a bunch screws and springs and the electronics. The entire centre beam was beyond repair. I decided to rebuild the centre beam including the neck and headstock and attach the salvaged hardware and wings to it.
Wiring is stock 79 with original pots and caps, knobs and wiring. The jacks were screwed so I replaced those. It got a new guard and bass pickup and the rest is original from the 79 4001.
As it was virtually a full rebuild we decided to go for an early 60's look sans binding and shark-fin inlays.
