The ELV6 amp Interesting little handwired 12 watt arrived from a Sydney builder a few weeks ago. It had a very sweet tone but a few shortcomings. I took it over to Barry at Barwatt who had plenty of suggestions on how to mod the circuit. The Barwatt magic happened and now I am very pleased with the tone . It is time to pair it with a suitable speaker and build it into a lightweight combo. It is powered by both EL84 and 6V6 valves giving the best of two worlds. The intense overdrive and mid sizzle of the EL84's plus the warm sweet tones of the 6V6. To switch between the two, the amp is put into standby, flick the valve switch and wait until the heaters warm up - 15-20 seconds or so. It also has Triode Pentode switching which also requires standby. To top it all off there is a 12 step power scaling switch which can be used while on the fly. This gives a pallette of differing levels, overdrive and tonal characteristics as you switch it down. Volume, bass, mid, treble and master volume controls complete the picture. Definitely a tone tweakers amp as there is a wide tonal palette available. It does get loud when you crank it but there are plenty of sweet spots right down to bedroom levels. It could be gigged in small rooms. |

00 | One of Mark Watsons superlative handwired masterpieces.
Mercury Magnetics Transformer set, Eminence Red Fang alnico speaker. The handbuilt pine cabinet is finished in vintage tweed. This one was built in 2006 and signed by the man himself. Very smooth tone from the Red Fang, reputedly one of the loudest speakers you can get. Big rich bottom end and bell like tops with no hint of harshness. The overdrive is creamy and smooth. Some enhancements have been made to the original 1959 circuit to bring up to current safety standards and to balance it to handle the pickups and effects of today. No sacrifices have been made to the tone. As good as it gets unless you want to sell your house to buy an orignal. Suitable for small to medium rooms unmiked. This amp is pure gold. More here |

Valvetone handwired
Heads Phoenix - Just in - 12 watts lo power rehearsal and small club amp Great sounding handwired 12 watt valve chassis with the typical Valvetone comtrol network. Looks simple but there is a lot there. A great platform for low volume situations such as house playing, rehearsal recording and small rooms. You won't find build quality of this standard in commercially available amps anywhere. Tones from beautiful, articulate cleans to heavy overdriven tones. Dimed, this little gem gets very intense. If you have a valvetone head already and want to turn it into a great little grab 'n' go amp, a lightweight pine combo cab can easliy become its new home. Saves you lugging another heavy cab down to the mates place for the regular sundy arvo beer, blues and bangers jam session. Shown at left Tio 18 watter in 10" combo cab More details here |
